Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I am excited to begin our second year together as we work in partnership to ensure every student at Potter-Burns is actively engaged in a rigorous learning experience while developing social-emotional skills that will foster resilience, perseverance, empathy and the ability to collaborate and communicate in a diverse learning and work community.
This year, we launch our first year of the new American Reading Company (ARC) curriculum tailored to our kindergarten, first and second graders. Through embedded conferencing, coaching procedures, and new classroom libraries, ARC serves as an immediate and ongoing diagnosis of student needs, both for instruction and possible further intervention.
We are excited to expand our chorus program this year to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders through our Enrichment Through the Arts program. In addition, every student K - 5 will receive 40 minutes of Mandarin instruction each week. We continue to accelerate our student’s technology proficiency by providing a 1:1 Chromebook program in grades 3 - 5 as well as providing these students instruction in Code.org. These learning experiences allow our students to engage in online forums with their peers through Google classroom, instructional platforms, and virtual field trips.
Our entire team is eager and excited to begin what promises to be an incredible year. The Potter-Burns educators are prepared to foster learning environments that provide opportunities for students to create, collaborate, and communicate while promoting critical thinking. This year, we will continue to develop and refine PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support). We continue to support students with behavioral, social and emotional goals. The staff at Potter-Burns Elementary believes in showing their appreciation for positive behavior and demonstration of our school-wide expectations of: Being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to learn at all times (Our 3 R’s). Furthermore, students will engage in our Be Fearless/Be Kind initiative as well as the No Bully program sponsored by Hasbro so that our students learn the importance of helping others in our school and local community.
One of the greatest characteristics of the Potter-Burns learning community is the genuine care and compassion shared between staff, students, and parents. Potter-Burns Elementary is a place where staff and families come together to ensure that the children entrusted into our care grow to be productive, confident, compassionate, members of a global society. We are thrilled to announce we will continue to utilize the ClassDojo platform! Please be sure to check the Potter-Burns website at http://pawtucket.burns.schooldesk.net/ as well as ClassDojo for important news and updates. Do not forget, our start and end times have changed! The Breakfast door #7 opens at 8:10, school starts promptly at 8:30 and students are dismissed at 2:40. I am looking forward to an amazing year!
