Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Potter-Burns Learning Community to enable our students to become well educated members of society. We, the faculty and staff, with the cooperation and support of parents and the community, will hold all our students accountable to reach high standards of academic performance and citizenship. Through high quality, effective instruction, students will learn to work cooperatively with others, become creative problem-solvers and responsible, life-long learners.
Profile

Potter-Burns Elementary school is an urban, Title I school located on Newport Avenue in the Darlington section of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The two story brick building is nearly 100 years old.  Potter-Burns has a diverse population of five hundred and sixty-eight students and fifty staff members, including three custodians, one office secretary, and one school principal. The school serves students in grades kindergarten through six. Of the five hundred and sixty-eight students in the school, sixty-two percent are eligible for free (51%) or reduced (11%) lunch. Seventy-two percent of the students are white, sixteen percent are Hispanic, nine percent are African-American, two-percent are Asian, and one-percent American Indian.  Eight percent receive special education services and 5% receive English as a Second Language (ESL) services. Our average monthly attendance rate stands at 97%.

 

The curriculum is standards–based, rigorous, and aligns to the Common Core, state, and district standards and expectations for learning. The teachers are highly qualified and function in their roles of expertise. The school and district support staff members by providing them with on-going professional development to improve their practice. The staff members are hard-working and dedicated. There is collaboration within and across grade levels, subject matters, and with specialists. The teachers provide the students with rich, real world experiences while motivating them to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers. There are a variety teaching strategies that are utilized and multiple methods of assessments, both formal and informal to promote academic excellence. There is a response-to-intervention support system for academic and/or behavioral“at-risk” students. This includes RTI Model, Tier-3 Reading Model,additional tutoring, after-school and summer school programs, and the school-wide behavior program incentive program (Potter Pennies), as well as individualized behavior modification plans.

 

There is a strong sense of community connecting teachers, students, and their families with an active Parent Teacher Organization. The school utilizes multiple ways of effective home/school communication including phone calls, emails, conferences, and our website which offers monthly calendars and newsletters, parent pamphlet, school pamphlets and announcements and PTO information.
